Resolved! Counselling for Children could help free your child from their phobia of dogs

Children are quick to learn their fears. They need to be quick, because it might just mean the difference between life or death. One loud bark from a dog at a garden gate, one episode of being knocked over – even by a friendly hound – can give birth to cynephobia. Once learned, the fear causes the child to avoid dogs like the plague. The more the child avoids the source of their fear the more the fear is rewarded with relief and the stronger that fear becomes. Over a surprisingly short period of time a phobia is born.

If you’ve come here because your child has developed a phobia of dogs then please don’t despair. I have worked with many children, teenagers and adults, in Reading and Oxford, who once thought they could never be free of the fear of man’s greatest friend.

I also offer counselling and psychotherapy for the phobia of dogs online, using vsee, whatsapp, zoom. Please get in touch for details.

How far does your child go to avoid them?

fear of dogs in teenagersPhobias have a self-perpetuating dynamic and are never satisfied. Perhaps it was Grandma’s dog which knocked the child over or snapped as a child grabbed their tail.

A reluctance to go near that dog ever again can spread to a refusal to visit the house ever again. Over time it can lead to all dogs being avoided, along with a fear of going anywhere where a dog might feasibly be.

Family trips to the park, excursions to the beach, even visits to town centres can prove to be a battle of wills as the child affected by the phobia of dogs tried to keep themselves safe. Friendships suffer, family life suffers and no amount of retreating seems to be enough.

Perhaps you’ve now had enough. Perhaps your son or daughter has now had enough and realises that life would be so much better if they were able to be free of their fear.

This is where I come in. I have worked with plenty of young people in Oxford and Reading in order to help them to be set free from their fears. If you live in my area and would like some help then please do get in touch. I’ll be glad to talk with you about how I might be able to help you.

How could Resolved! Counselling for Children for the phobia of dogs help your son or daughter to break free of their fear?

children fear of dogsThere are a whole host of ways in which a phobia can be beaten. Depending on the age of the client it could involve play, art, sand, mindfulness, psycho-education and even guided visualisation approaches as used by hypnotherapists.

Your child’s imagination may have been sparked by an aggressive or over-friendly dog and yet that same imagination filled in the gaps and exaggerated things to the place they are now.

What the imagination has created can be undone by that very same imagination. I have helped to free many young people and adults from phobias of all kinds.

The phobia of dogs is no different and to having a phobia of anything else, and so if your son or daughter is willing to engage then perhaps it’s time to give me a call.

Get in touch and we can get to work!

Children, indeed everybody needs to be cautious around unknown dogs and yet this caution needn’t become a fear which rules and destroys their ability to enjoy life.
